Pizza Dip

The first time I made this side dish was for a baby shower. I absolutely love pizza in all forms really, so when I saw this pizza dip recipe I thought to myself, now that sounds like a perfect dish.

With several different kinds of melty cheese and yummy french bread to dip into it, you really can not go wrong.

One of the best things about this recipe is that you can customize to your liking, much like an actual pizza. If you want olives, put olives on. If you like onions, put that on. You really can not go wrong here.

This side dish can be quite filling too. You are basically eating pizza in a dip form so depending on how much you eat, it can be very heavy.

Then again, you also can choose to dip other things in it as well. One fun option would be to also make some cheese ravioli’s and then dip those in the pizza dip. You could also do veggies for a healthier option.

And if you love cheese as much as I do you could probably just eat it with a spoon, although I must say I do prefer using the bread.

Any way you choose to serve this dip, it’s sure to be a big hit.

What You Will Need

The base for this dip is cream cheese. I have been trying to be healthier so I used a less fat option and I thought it was still amazing. Others will tell you to use the full fat or it may become watery but I have to say mine was perfectly fine and still tasted amazing.

You will also need mozzarella, parmesan and cheddar. However, this whole recipe is kind of a suggestion. As long as you use the cream cheese base with the mozzarella, you can use different cheese to add if you desire.

I would recommend cheeses that are typically found in Italian foods or pasta/pizza. I bought a “pizza blend” bag of cheese and used some of that as well.

You will also need some pizza sauce. We love Rao’s so I bought a jar of their marinara sauce and used that. However any pizza sauce that is your favorite will be perfect.

You also need some Italian seasonings. You can use basil and oregano by themselves but I just like to use the Italian herb blend which has both in it. You can also throw in a little red pepper flakes if you like to spice things up a bit.

Lastly, you will need whatever toppings you prefer. Get creative! We are boring and just used pepperoni. Sometimes I get the mini ones and sometimes I just use the big ones.

How To Make Pizza Dip

  1. First you will want your cream cheese to be softened. I usually just place it on the counter an hour before I make this but if you forget to do so, you can try heating it up in the microwave. The reason you want it soft is so it can mix well with the other toppings, otherwise it gets really hard to incorporate it all together evenly.
  2. Mix all of your cheeses (but reserve about half of the mozzarella for the later.) and the Italian seasoning. Mix until combined.
  3. Place mixture into a baking dish, evenly spread out across the bottom.
  4. Pour your pizza sauce of choice on top. You can use as much or as little as your heart desires. I used about half of a 32 oz jar.
  5. Add your mozzarella on top of the pizza sauce.
  6. Add your toppings.
  7. This is optional but when making pizza I always add a pinch or so of parmesan over the top.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 for about 25 minutes. You want the top to look bubbly and the cheese should be slightly browned.
  9. Wait a few minutes to serve as it will be really hot throughout the whole dish. Serve with your topping of choice.

Topping Suggestions

There are a lot of things to consider when topping this pizza dip. Some things that people like to add to normal pizza could make this dip a bit runny or watery. So be careful.

Items like:

  • pineapple
  • mushrooms
  • peppers
  • Olives

These should be precooked or patted dry to keep moisture out of the dip.

Things like sausage should be cooked ahead of time and then added to the pizza dip before putting into the oven.

We bought a thing of french bread from the bakery and I sliced it into smaller slices and we buttered it up and put it in the oven on the top rack with the dip until they were nice and crispy but not burnt.

You also could make your own french bread from scartch which is what I did the first few times I made this. We happened to have a recipe for one baking french bread.
