DIY Makeup Primer
We love all things “do it yourself” on this blog and this week is a DIY makeup primer. When you make things at home you can control what goes into them. Yes you can buy a makeup primer at the store and it’ll work but do you know what kind of chemicals are in the products we buy from companies?
Unfortunately it is a lot of gross, harmful things for our skin and bodies. Do it yourself means adding in the exact ingredients that will HELP your skin and not harm it. This DIY makeup primer is so easy to make, has natural products most people have on hand at home, and is way more cost effective than the ones at the store.

Will This Work On My Skin Type?
The short answer to that question is yes! I have combination skin which means I have spots that are dry and spots that are oily. This recipe worked great on my whole face. It made my skin feel nice and it didn’t make me feel like there was too much stuff on my face.
I am a simple makeup person. I don’t use foundation because it feels too heavy. This primer still felt light and airy and didn’t make me feel like I had too much stuff caked on my skin.
What Exactly IS A Makeup Primer?
Makeup primer, for those who are not familiar, is a base for your face. It helps smooth out your skin, fills in pores and wrinkles, and leaves your skin ready for your makeup so that it stays in place longer and looks more natural.
Some of the other benefits of using makeup primer is that it can absorb sweat and oil. It is hot here in Texas and I sweat just thinking about going outside in the heat and humidity so this is much needed on those long days of running around doing errands.
The best part about this DIY makeup primer is that I had all of the ingredients at home in my pantry! So what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.
Ingredients for Homemade Primer
Aloe Vera Gel – Aloe vera gel is rich in vitamins A, C, E and B12. Using it on your face has several benefits.
It’s anti inflammatory and can reduce pain, swelling and soreness from wounds and injuries. It reduces healing time in burns and can speed up recover time which limits scaring.
Aloe has antioxidant effects that can help repair sun damage and slow down the aging process. It is also anti fungal and anti bacterial. It even helps the productions of collagen.
Regularly applying aloe vera gel to the face can help treat eczema, sunburns and acne. It also helps protect the skin from radiation. It moisturizes the skin and helps the skin be more flexible and prevent it from becoming leathery.

Glycerin – Glycerin is great for the skin because it helps it retain moisture. It can increase hydration and prevent dryness. It also works as an emollient which means it can soften the skin.
Arrow Root Powder – Arrow root powder is found in a lot of organic or all natural makeup because it easily replaces talc. It can act as a thickener, a binding agent, a moisture absorber (if you have oily skin) and it can help modify color.
Lavender Essential Oil – Some may think it is weird to put an oil on your face. Especially if you have oily skin. But often times acne happens when your skin does NOT have enough oil.
Lavender oil is a gentle moisturizer and is non-comedogenic (doesn’t blocks pores which causes blackheads) for pores. It is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory which means it can prevent, calm, and heal acne breakouts. It also detoxifies skin, heals injuries on the skin, and helps prevent wrinkles.
Witch Hazel – When you apply witch hazel to the skin it can reduce redness and treat sunburns. It can also soothe the skin from irritation and itchiness which means it can help with insect bites, diaper rash, hemorrhoids, psoriasis and eczema.
It is anti-inflammatory and works as a natural astringent. It also tightens pores and can help with anti-aging.

How to Use DIY Makeup Primer
Make sure you always wash your hands before applying homemade primer. This primer doesn’t have any preservatives added which means germs will make it go bad faster. Clean hands will make DIY face primer last longer.
When it is time to use primer on your face, take your clean finger and dip it in the primer. Rub it into your finger tips a bit and then use fingers to rub on your face.
You want to spread it very thin and avoid getting it into your eyebrows and on your eye lashes. The reason for this is because it takes forever to dry on hair.
Let soak in for a few minutes. If you are in a hurry you could put the blow dryer on low or even cool air and blow on your face until dry.
MAKE SURE IT’S DRY EVERYWHERE BEFORE APPLYING MAKEUP! The first time I started to put my makeup on, there were a few places it was still wet and it made a mess on my face.
As the primer dries you can feel your skin getting tighter which is wonderful. Plus, it smells awesome.
I tested out my primer by wearing it out on the town for date night. But I didn’t stop there. It got late and I fell asleep before washing my face. Oops!
You wouldn’t believe how great my makeup still looked the next day! So I tested it even further. Before washing it off, I power walked outside in the Texas heat and humidity for 3 miles and it was still holding on pretty strong. These pictures are all completely unedited so you can see exactly what the makeup looked like.
On a side note, this amount of primer lasted about a week and a half to two weeks for me. I just left it on my counter but you could put it in your fridge if you want it to last longer. I don’t put makeup on every day but this should last you close to 2 weeks.
