Makeup Storage | Keeping It Real

We're showing off our makeup storage in this edition of Keeping it Real. As bloggers, we like to show the real us, not just the "post-perfect" side. Readers asked to see how we organize our makeup so we're revealing our easy to imitate storage solutions, from cosmetic bags to drawer inserts, and counter top caddies.

Keeping it Real

Hey, hey! It's Keeping it Real time. This is all about showing you that, while we put our best foot forward in our posts, our behind-the-scenes, #ActualLives, are not so perfect. Why do we do this? Well, we want to make sure you know our lives aren't perfect. We want to give you a peek behind the curtain and show the every day side of things instead of only a well scripted, staged post.

When we talk about being Less of a Hot Mess we include ourselves in that statement. We're not just here to help you have the lifestyle you want, we're trying to accomplish it ourselves. We figured we'd write about it along the way so we could all make some changes together.

We read blogs too. It's why we started this one, because we love learning from other people. It's encouraging to read how others have accomplished the things we would like to do in our lives. The problem is that everyone starts to seem perfect and we feel like we don't measure up. The little voices start to creep in and we think, "my house will never look like that," or, "I could never pull off that outfit." We are too hard on ourselves.

We never want you to feel down when you're reading our blog. We're working on ourselves and hopefully giving you the motivation to work on something for yourself and family along with us. So when you read a post that's showing pretty photos or we're sounding a little too "perfect," just look back at one of these posts and remember that we're clearly not.

By picking a reader-chosen topic at random and snapping a quick photo, we're hoping to show that our homes and lives aren't completely put together. If you look back on other Keeping it Real posts you'll see some aspects of our lives look better than others (and you'll see difference between us sisters too).

Our Makeup Storage

In this month's Keeping it Real post we are showing off our makeup storage. We love this idea! We're not makeup bloggers so we don't have a massive amount of makeup or beautiful storage cases nor perfectly set up vanities. We're moms with limited time and space.

Most days we want to be able to grab our makeup and put it on in ten minutes or less. It needs to accessible but also not constantly spread over the counter, causing clutter. Keep reading if you want to see how each sister organizes her makeup. We're all a bit different when it comes to makeup storage which means you get to see a few different ideas, if you happen to be looking for new ways to organize your makeup.

Kristy's Makeup Storage

I have always loved makeup. I couldn't wait until I turned twelve because that's when our mom said I could start wearing lipstick. I can spend a lot of time in the makeup aisle, even when I'm not buying anything.

As you have probably learned, I am also organized. This is part of why I store my makeup in a bag, it keeps things together and off of my counters.

Everything I use for my daily makeup routine is kept in that bag, which I keep in a drawer in my bathroom. Every morning I grab it, put on my face, put my makeup back in the bag, and pop it back in the drawer. Not only does it keep my bathroom counters clear, it also helps me be more of a minimalist. I keep my bag small which helps curb my desire to buy makeup I don't need (because where would I put it?).

I do have some makeup in a drawer as well. This is mostly for different occasions, like when I want to wear darker makeup, not everyday makeup. I keep some semi-retired mascaras that I can use up on my days off when I don't generally wear as much makeup.

It's easy to organize a drawer with baskets you can find at the Dollar Store. If you are looking for cute makeup bags that are similar to mine, you can check out these from Amazon:

Kim's Makeup Storage

This post comes at a perfect time for me. A couple of years ago I started on the path to live with less and...well, I'm still working on it. I try my best to go through different parts of my life and pare things down. I recently cut my wardrobe in half after not wearing most of it for years. After our last move, my family has purged a lot of stuff from our house and lives. It's a process, however, and we are still on a journey to 'less.'

Makeup is one of the things on my list that needs to be re-evaluated. I've been wanting to do this for some time, it just hasn't happened yet. As of right now I have too much makeup and, just like my clothes, I'm barely using any of it.

I store my makeup in my bathroom. It's the best space for it in our apartment. I use a drawer and the counter top. I have two different types of organization for my cosmetics: the first is a countertop makeup caddy I got from Wish for around 2 bucks.

Does anyone else buy from Wish? I heard about it from my niece and sister-in-law who love it. I've since bought many things from them myself. You should check them out if you don't mind buying low cost items from overseas. I've gotten some great things for amazing prices (sometimes I get the quality I paid for).

I really love countertop organization but it does add a sense of clutter to things. I also have a makeup drawer. My drawer insert came from the thrift store but you can grab your own on Amazon from the link below. This insert is perfect because it's adjustable so it perfectly fits my drawer.

Ideally I would like to have my entire makeup collection fit in a drawer so it's out of site; however, drawers are prime real-estate in a bathroom so I'll have to see what really works best. I have used a cosmetic bag before, but now I have too much makeup to fit it all. I might considered using one again once my makeup has been minimized. It seems to work for my sisters.

Now I can show you official "before" photos of my full makeup assortment, but later I'll write a post about my makeup elimination and subsequent re-organization.

I can't go without mentioning the use of my Caboodle. Yep, I still have my pre-teen Caboodle. It's too awesome to get rid of so I use it for miscellaneous make-up and nail polish, mostly Halloween related.

Katie's Makeup Storage

I wear makeup but I don’t like buying it!  I mean, I love getting new makeup but I hate paying for it, so I don’t have a huge selection.  My makeup pretty much fits in those little blue drawers.

This was kind of a weird week for this particular Keeping it Real post because I was gone this weekend so my makeup is still all packed away in my makeup bag. I took a few pictures to show you what I have.  The plastic drawers were very cheap at Walmart.  I love how compact they are and my makeup doesn’t have to be all over my counter.

I have to show y’all my cute earring holder too!  I got it from Target's dollar spot for $2.50 because I LOVE owls. It’s actually not supposed to be an earring holder at all, it’s actually a napkin holder.  I used it for about a month until it came to me: all those holes are perfect for hanging earrings!  And that’s how my earring holder was born!  Isn’t it adorable?!

  1. Makeup Junkie has designed their makeup bags with a flat bottom. The bags are designed to fit all the best modern supplies. The medium-sized MJ bags are made to fit your eye shadow palettes or professional brushes which normal medium sized makeup bags fail to and the large one designed to fit Kenra hairspray which is fairly tall to fit. So, you have an MJ bag to fit all your makeup essentials at one place.

  2. Great way to storing make up stuff. Guys will definitely consider a more sorted way of storing my makeup products from now. Thanks for your suggestion.

    1. Caboodles are so fun for makeup organization. It’s one of the only things I really saved to pass down to my child one day but we only have a boy. Maybe we’ll have a granddaughter. Haha! I love that I still have my caboodle though because it’s really helpful for stored makeup. I definitely wouldn’t want to be pulling it out for every day use.
