DIY Lash and Brow Serum
Who doesn’t want longer, thicker eyelashes? Instead of relying on expensive lash serums packed with chemicals, why not try a more natural approach?
In this post, I’ll walk you through a simple DIY eyelash serum recipe that’s easy to make at home. With just two natural ingredients, you can nourish your lashes and promote growth without breaking the bank.
Ready to give your lashes some love? Let’s get started!
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that my eyelashes aren’t as thick or full as they used to be. What were once long, dark lashes now seem to have thinned out, leaving my eyes looking less vibrant than before. It’s a natural part of aging, but still frustrating when I remember how effortlessly full my lashes used to be.
On top of that, the over-plucking trend of the 90s didn’t do my eyebrows any favors either. Like many, I tweezed my brows into thin arches, only to find out years later that the damage was somewhat permanent. My brows never fully bounced back, leaving me with sparse patches.
But after using this homemade lash and brow serum consistently, I’ve started to see a real difference. My lashes look healthier and fuller, and my brows are starting to fill in where they were once bare. It’s been a game-changer for me!
Why Are My Lashes Thinning?
As we age our natural lashes tend to get thinner and not grow as well. There can be many reasons for this but two main reasons are a deficiency in prostaglandins and mites.
The deficiency in prostaglandins can be fixed through more zinc in your diet and ricinoleic acid which is found in castor oil.
The other cause of the thinning eyelash issue are mites that live on our skin. Normally they feed off of our dead skin cells.
However, these mites can move into our hair follicles and then eat our hair instead of our dead skin cells. This causes our hair to thin out and fall out.
These mites can migrate to our eyelashes and eyebrows and then feed off of the hairs there.
In order to grow longer, thicker lashes and brows we need to kill the mites and keep them from living there. The three main medications used in commercial serums, Eurex, Ivermectin, and Flagyl, are known to kill these mites. These medications can be pretty harmful so we’re going to use natural ingredients instead.
We’re going to use two ingredients in this homemade lash serum to grow fuller lashes. One is Tea Tree Oil. The other is Castor Oil. Both of these are antimicrobial and will kill the mites, and eggs, that are living along your lash line.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil derived from the leaves of the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), native to Australia. Known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, it’s commonly used in skincare and hair care for its soothing and cleansing benefits.
There have been multiple studies on the effects of tea tree oil in hair growth. One study found that a combination of tea tree oil and minoxidil (Rogaine) slowed hair loss and improved the appearance of hair compared to minoxidil on its own.
Tea tree oil can be irritating to your eyes so we’re going to use a very small amount and we will only be placing the serum on the lash line.
Castor Oil
Castor oil is a thick, nutrient-rich oil extracted from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis), which is native to tropical regions of Africa and Asia. It’s packed with fatty acids and vitamins, making it popular for promoting hair growth and nourishing skin.
Castor oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties and is rich in vitamin E, ricinoleic acid, minerals, proteins, and beneficial omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. In fact, it boasts an impressive total of 18 different fatty acids.
You really don’t need to add any other oils, like coconut oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil or vitamin e oil, to eyelash serums when castor oil already does it all.
Keep it simple. You don’t need to over complicate lash serum recipes by adding more ingredients when two do the best job for less money.
Just make sure to buy organic, hexane free, cold-pressed castor oil. It can be regular castor oil or Jamaican Black castor oil. Go ahead and buy the bigger bottles.
Castor Oil Details:

Here’s What You Need to Make Your Own Eyelash Serum
- Castor Oil
- Tea Tree Oil
- Tube with wand applicator – this applicator comes with a mini funnel to make it easier to put the serum in the tub.
This natural eyelash growth serum is applied along the lash line. It is not brushed through the lashes. So make sure you are getting the wand applicator like the one I have linked above.
Effective DIY Lash Serum Recipe
You’ll need to mix 1 tablespoon of castor oil with two drops of tea tree oil.
Then put the mix into the empty tube and you’re all set.
That’s how easy it is to make your own homemade eyelash serum.
How to Use Natural Lash Growth Serum
As always, check with a doctor before using a homemade product like this.
You should also do a patch test before using any growth serums for the first time to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction. Try a patch test on a small spot on your arm before using the serum on your sensitive eye area. If eye irritation, like swollen or itchy red eyes happens, discontinue use of this eyelash serum.
Step 1 – Before bed, thoroughly remove all eye makeup and clean your face to make sure your eye lids are completely clean. Putting eyelash growth serum on a dirty lash line can cause an infection and can introduce germs into the bottle of serum, ruining the whole batch.
Step 2 – Swipe a very small amount of the serum right along the lash line and brows and then go to bed. While you sleep the serum will sink into your lash line and skin and will start to kill the mites and add trace minerals back into the lashes.
*Use this serum every other day for 6 weeks to see maximum results. This is how long it can take to kill the mites and the eggs left behind.
Regular use of this lash serum will keep mites at bay and keep your new luscious lashes growing strong.
