How To Help Damaged Hair Grow Faster
There are many reasons why you could be having trouble growing out your hair. Sometimes that is due to the amount of damage already done to those precious locks.
Whether it is dry and brittle, or our scalp is oily and has clogged pores, you can reverse some of the damage. By following these easy steps, you can grow out and transform your once damaged hair.
Damage Control Hair Routine
Did you know that much of what we do every day is out of habit and routine? Having some sort of daily routine when it comes to your hair can really help keep it healthy and strong.
Part of making up a routine is knowing your own hair. For instance, my hair hates when I use the exact same shampoo and conditioner every time I wash. For this reason I usually have two or three different kinds of shampoo in my shower so I don’t get buildup.
Think about your hair and what works best for you and come up with a daily, nightly, weekly or monthly schedule for it. Here are some things to consider adding to your list.
Daily Hair Routine for Damaged Hair
Here are a few things you can do for your hair daily that might be good to add to your routine.
- Brush your hair. Start at the ends to get any tangles out that might be there and work your way up. If you start at the top and work your way down you are more likely to rip hair out from the roots which we want to try and avoid at all cost.
- Try and prevent really tight pony tails or tight buns in your hair especially for an extended amount of time. This is hard on our scalp and can cause more hair to be ripped from the root. It also can irritate the root and scalp which we want to avoid.
- Massage your scalp. This helps with blood flow to the scalp which can help stimulate follicles and help the hair root causing your hair to grow faster.
- Rinse hair with COLD water right before you get out of the shower. Depending on how often you shower this could be a daily or every other day thing. Cold water helps close up the cuticles and makes the hair smooth and less prone to breakage.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Make sure you are taking your vitamins. Depending on your individual health journey, this could look different for different people. So do your research. I can’t really suggest anything without knowing your history. For example, most recommend taking biotin for strong nails and hair growth. But did you know that if you have a low functioning thyroid and you take biotin, it could mess with your test results?
Weekly
There are several things we can do to our hair weekly to help maintain good scalp and hair health.
- Make sure you know how often your hair needs to be washed. Most recommend every 2 to 3 days. If you over wash your hair it can dry it out causing breakage. But if you under wash it, your scalp can become very greasy and your pores can become clogged which will prevent the hair from growing.
- Don’t forget to rinse hair with cold or cool water right before getting out of the shower.
- Oil your scalp once a week while massaging it. We will talk about this is greater detail in a bit so stay tuned.
- Deep conditioning mask is great for once a week. You can buy one from the store or make one with at home ingredients. Check out our other blog post and get our DIY conditioning hair mask there.
Nightly Hair Routine
There are a few things you should do before going to bed that will help maintain healthy hair.
- Brushing out any knots and tangles before you go to bed, remembering to start at the tip and work your way up to the roots.
- Get yourself a silk bonnet and/or a silk pillow case to sleep with. This helps to lessen friction while sleeping. It can also calm frizziness, and help with dry hair and sensitive skin.
- If you shower at night and go to bed with wet hair, we recommend a towel designed specifically for hair.
Important Things To Know When Growing Out Damaged Hair
There are certain medical conditions and reasons you might be having trouble growing out your hair. If you feel like you have tried a good number of these suggestions and are still having no luck, you might want to go get your hormones tested.
There are a lot of things that factor into our hair and our hormones are definitely one of them.
Make sure you use a brush that suits your hair needs. For instance, you if you have curly hair or really thick hair you might need a special brush. If you have straight hair that is on the thin side you might need a different one.
Another thing that we have not mentioned yet, and some of you will not like this, but bleaching and dying your hair is really bad for it. I have bleached parts of my hair, twice, and both times it took a lot of the curl outta my hair. It wasn’t until I cut most of the bleach section out that I realized that was why my hair wasn’t curling naturally as well any more.
We also hear you are supposed to trim your hair every other month or so to help it grow faster. This isn’t actually true. You just need to keep your ends healthy, so if they are healthy and not splitting, no need to trim.
Essential Oils and Carrier Oils That Are Great For Hair
Did you know that the essential oil Rosemary is considered to be just as good for your scalp and at helping you grow hair as Rogaine? But essential oils can not go directly on the skin because they are so potent they could harm the skin. They require a carrier oil
There are many different types of carrier oils that are good for hair health and growth.
Carrier Oils Good For Hair
- Coconut Oil– this oil is perfect for hair and has the highest penetration rate into the hair shaft. This makes it a great option as a carrier oil or a good oil treatment for your scalp.
- Avocado Oil– This oil is really good at reversing sun and heat damage. It aides in hair growth because it is high in Vitamin B5.
- Vitamin E Oil– this oil is great for the scalp and the hair itself. It also serves as a natural shelf life preserver which means if you want to make your own hair oil, you can add a few drops of vitamin E oil to help prolong the shelf life.
- Caster Oil– This oil is known for speeding up the growth process. It is very thick, so it might not be the best for thin or super straight hair. It is great for curls and ethnic hair.
- Olive Oil– this oil is also great for penetration purposes. It also makes the hair shiny without making it greasy and is in almost everyone’s pantries at home already.
We have another blog post I wrote several months back talking all about making your own hair growth oil recipe. In that post I go into way more detail about the different oils that are great for hair so be sure to check that one out as well and learn how to make your own growth oil.
