How To Detox Your Armpits

Summer is here and it is HOT!  Deodorant is a must. But did you know that a lot of conventional antiperspirants have harmful chemicals in them?  These chemicals can lead to breast cancer and are known hormone disruptors.

Our armpits hold a lot of lymph nodes.  Odor-causing bacteria can grow on our skin in the armpit area causing body odor.  Regular deodorants block your sweat glands which can cause lots of issues.

Sweat is one of our bodies natural ways of detoxing and if those glands get blocked from letting the sweat out it can effect us in different ways.

Good News is you can make an all natural deodorant at home.  But sometimes when you are going from a store bought aluminum-based deodorant, to an all natural one, our armpits can get sensitive.  There is a transition period that takes place where you will sweat a lot and you often get sensitive skin with red bumps and rashes.

For best results when switching you want to do an arm pit detox to help the detox process be more successful so you can more easily switch to home made all natural deodorant.

What You Need For A Detox

A very simple recipe for detoxing your arm pits is a combination of bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar.  Bentonite clay is a naturally occurring clay that forms when volcanic ash or silica rich rocks are altered over time.  Its made up of mostly smectite minerals.

Bentonite clay can absorb negative charged ions, so it acts as a powerful detoxifying agent. It can also absorb heavy metals. It also helps soothe irritated skin.

When using bentonite clay you can’t use a metal bowl or spoon as this can alter the clays ability to draw out toxins.  And we want all of those toxins to leave!  So you will need a non metal spoon and a non-metal bowl such as a glass bowl.

Apple cider vinegar is great for skin.  It helps balance the skins pH and is an anti-inflammatory.  It helps get rid of those dead skin cells that like to stick to us.

How To Detox Your Armpits

  1. You want to wear a tank top or sports bra so you don’t get the detox mixture on your clothes.  You also want as much of your armpit area to get the detox mixture on it for best results.
  2. Using a warm, damp wash cloth, you want to get any dead skin or excess deodorant off of your arm pits.
  3. Let your arm pits dry
  4. Mix 1 tablespoon bentonite clay ( remember no metal ) with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Mix until a paste forms.
  5. Rub the paste mixture on your arm pits  in an even layer and then lay down with your arms above your head so the mixture can dry
  6. Let this sit and dry for 10-15 minutes
  7. Rinse off with warm water.

It is that easy folks.

How Often Should You Detox Your Armpits?

It is a good idea to detox your armpits every couple of months.  You do not have to be switching from traditional deodorants to an all natural one to do the detox.

Sometimes we just need a detox to help our bodies out. It’ll help with your body’s bacteria and your lymphatic system.

A Few Pointers on Armpit Detoxing

  • If you already have irritated skin under your arm pits, this could burn.  You can use water instead of apple cider vinegar to help lessen the sting.
  • Witch hazel is great for soothing skin and skin irritation so if you have some on hand you can put a thin layer on a cotton ball and rub it over your arm pits after you take off the detox paste.
  • When the detox mixture is on your arm pits, you might feel a slight stinging or tightening of your skin.  This means it is working. Some even say they can feel their skin pulsing.  This is all normal.
  • Dry brushing your arm pits is an easy way to help you in your detoxing your arm pit journey. This gets rid of dead skin so your arm pits can breathe and sweat, and it should help to prevent bacteria from goring.
  • A lot of homemade deodorants have baking soda in them which is also a skin irritant if it is used over a long period of time.  I make some without baking soda so I can try to avoid the possible potential risk of red bumps and itchy underarms. The first time I got bumps under my arms was SO painful so I try to avoid it in the future.
  • If you do not have bentonite clay and do not want to buy some, you can use activated charcoal in its place.  It also has the ability to draw out toxins form our body. I do not like to use it because it is black in color and makes a mess so I prefer the bentonite clay.
  • If you have both activated charcoal and bentonite clay, you could also use a mixture of BOTH for your detox. This is why I love all natural ingredients because they are so versatile and can be easily switched out for other ingredients.
